Have you ever seen a slave? Or have you seen that in movies? As we all know, those who are under slavery have no rights. Whatever their master wanted to do with them, they will do. Slaves were treated as just like their properties, just like a chair, a TV, a furniture, more to say, just an object.
The same thing with us, before God took us out, we are slaves to sin. We are all obeying its evil desires before. Even though we tried to escape it, it is like a magnet that pull us back to be destroyed by Satan.
Before we become a slave, there must be a purchase that will take place. That’s the same thing God did two thousand years ago: God bought us. And what’s the price? The blood of Jesus. And He bought us to be set free from the power of sin. And from that day of our “purchase”, He also adopted us to His family.
What is the privilege we got? God became our Father, as what was Paul written:
The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
– Romans 8:15
If you have a strict, absentee, “terrorist”, grumpy, or whatever kind of father you have today, God is a complete opposite of all those. And the good thing here is this: He didn’t require us to perform something just for us to be accepted by Him. He just gave up His life for all of us because of His unfailing love towards us, nothing more, nothing less. Just like what Ptr. Noel Ojerio said, “God loves us because He loves us.”
And as His adopted son/daughter, He gave us the power to say NO to sin. In other words, we are no longer slaves to sin. When you are still being flirted by sin, you now have the power to say NO because you are no longer under its power for the power of God is now living in us. And that’s the mark of being in His family.
To be a disciple of Jesus, what shall we do and what shall happen? One of the signs is if you bear fruit. First, what are those fruit?
As we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are now part of one big vine. As Jesus said to His disciples on John 15:1-2:
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
– John 15:1-2
Let us focus on “every branch that does bear fruit he prunes”.
Before we met God and when we already have God in our life, we have some things in our life that we feel some security like money, fame, title, family name, relationship, etc. Pruning moments come when those things remove from your life and when trials came. Yes, that’s very very hard, but pruning our life is necessary for us to experience His power and for us to grow more with our relationship with God.
When pruning moments came, what shall we do? Here’s what Jesus said:
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit;”
– John 15:5a
When these things happen, just hold on to Jesus. Don’t give up. Remain in His Words. Don’t rely on your own wit, strength, and understanding. Remain in Jesus.
“apart from me you can do nothing.”
– John 15:5b
As we remain in Him, continue to hold on to Him, at the end of the day, you will be more fruitful and God will surely reward you.
If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
– John 15:7
Continue your walk with God. Continue to rely in Him.
This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
– John 15:8
And this week is the complete start of the school year. What’s the great way to start this school year? Is the resume of Youth service at Victory Caloocan. As we resume the Youth service, we have a new series entitled “3D” or the “Three dimensions of discipleship”.
What does a disciple means? Is it just by believing Jesus? How can you know that you are a true disciple?
Ptr. Jay-R Ramirez said, “IF YOU HAVE MEDIOCRE RESPONSE TO JESUS TEACHINGS, YOU DON’T REALLY KNOW HIM!” What does it mean? If you follow Jesus half-heartedly, you truly don’t know who He is. It will look like just a professional wrestling shows, all your moves are just scripted.
Second, Ptr. Ferdie Cabiling said, “IF YOU’LL FOLLOW CHRIST, FOLLOW HIM 100% OR JUST BE THE BEST SINNER IN THE WORLD!” If you will follow Christ, give your everything. Just like what Jesus said, “You cannot serve both two masters” (Matthew 6:24). If you will serve both Christ and the world, how could you feel the true power of God? In short, if you’re in Christ, just go with Him; however, if you want to follow the ways of the world, go. It’s your choice.
How can we be a true disciple. Simple. It is written here:
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
– John 8:31-32
How? Just hold on to the teachings of Jesus as if your life depends on it. Yes, this is very very difficult, but by the power of God, by faith, you can do it.
This month of May, Victory Caloocan had a new series for its Youth service, entitled “Crave”. The goal of this series that after this, we will have the craving for the Word of God.
A lot of stuffs today that the youth of this generation craving for. Ranging from gadgets, latest games, food, clothes, etc. But when it comes to the Word of God, most of them don’t crave for it. Why?
Here are some reasons why most of the youth of this generation don’t want to read the Bible:
- Strictly for the “holy” people only
But as we can see, when trials came unto them, they don’t know what to do. And some of them, when false teachers appear and started to teach the Word of God incorrectly, they were easily been swayed by it.
And what’s the solution to this problem? Simple, GO BACK TO THE WORD.
How? Here’s how:
Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it—he will be blessed in what he does.
– James 1:23-25
When you read the Bible, don’t just read it like you are reading a History book, instead, meditate on it. Think about it. So that, when trials, temptations, and false teachings came, you know now what to do.
Why trust the Word?
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
– John 1:1
Why trust the Word? Because it is God Himself. And through the Bible, God is reminding us on what to do when such things come in our life. Not just a reminder, but through the Word, we will finally know what God promised to all of us.
It is very important to have craving for the Word of God. Through it, we will have the right foundation in our life. So when trials, temptations, and false teachings come, we will not stumble in our way.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
– 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
– Joshua 1:8
How many of you here been offended? Most of the time, its really hard to reconcile with your enemies because of the hurt that they made unto you. But, I tell you this today, in our life, we have offended God.
Yes people, we have offended God. By what? Because of our sins. Yes, because of our sins. Sometimes, we are unconscious by it, but because of sin, we’ve stirred God’s wrath. And we cannot go away unpunished. And the punishment for our sins is death – Eternal separation from God; in other words, its HELL.
Knowing this, we think that we can be right with God by our means. What means? Laws, traditions, religion, etc. But God said, IT’S NOT ENOUGH. We cannot be right with God by our means.
But here’s the Good News: It’s really awkward when your enemy that offended you proposed a reconciliation with you, isn’t it? You know what, God did the same thing, too. By what means? By sending His One and Only Son Jesus here on Earth and paying all our sins by dying in the most excruciating, most painful, most barbaric way to die: By dying on the cross two thousand years ago. It means, no more sins, no more compromise, no more traditions, no more laws, because God’s giving us the gift that we don’t deserve: RECONCILIATION WITH HIM.
Accept Christ and believe what He has done for us on the cross, you will be saved, you will be reconciled with God. And the rest, like restoration of your relationship with your family, tuition fees, studies, financial breakthroughs, and others, all of them are BONUS PACKAGE from God. It’s a “Package deal” from God, accept and believe what Christ has done on the cross, and you will receive salvation and the rest of blessings.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.
– 2 Corinthians 5:17-19
